where can i find a good recurve/ that is good for big game hunting for under 450 dollars

The title said longbow, but your question referred to a recurve. Check out www.rudderbows.com if you want a handmade traditional type bow. I think their most expensive bow is a bamboo backed hickory recurve that's less than $300.00. I bought two longbows from them, a hickory #65 lb draw and a vine maple #55 lb draw. They are about five years old and they still function great. They cost me $135.00 and $85 respectively, but that was five years ago and they are a little more expensive now (not much). The guy that owns the company, Jim Boswell, has a great work ethic and makes a fine product. Every time I sent him an email with a question he responded personally. Can't get that kind of service with many companies nowdays. They aren't fancy as some of the high dollar bows like black widow, but they work just the same. They also sell floor tillered bows and rough out staves if you want to make your own. I highly recommend them for good quality bows at a very reasonable price.

When and why did the longbow fall out of use in England?

I've been thinking about this recently and it does'nt seem to make sense. The longbow is far and away superior to the primitive gunpowder weapons that replaced it. In fact, it was superior to the musket well into the 19th century. The bow has a higher rate of fire, a greater range, was certainly more accurate, and could pierce armor. So I am wondering why the longbow faded away when it was clearly superior to early firearms?
some good answers! I had considered the ease of training hand-gunners vs. the years required to make a good bowman, this seems to be a very important factor. I didn't know about the lack of yew trees, very intriguing.

Great question. I'm pleasantly surprised at the knowledge
"out there" in cyberspace.

Disagreements with above answers :
1. The rate of fire IS much faster - two or three times greater - with longbows rather than muskets.
2. Many arrows can be retrieved and fired again while musket balls are almost never reused once fired.
3. Musket shots do not kill soldiers readily. Even at Gettysburg in 1863, with much better rifled muskets and minie balls, the ratio of wounded to dead on the battlefield was ~ 6 or 7 to 1.
4. Bow staves can be made of other wood. The scarcity of yew trees was not the deciding factor eliminating the longbow.
Heck, the Egyptians had made laminated bows as far back as 13 centuries BC if not further back, and there were other varieties of wood used even in English longbows.

I'm left to add only a couple of "Bodkin" points.

James IV of Scotland and Tudor monarchs in England tried to ban other sports and force men to practice archery in the late 1400s and early 1500s. It was to no avail. Skeletons from the sunken ship Mary Rose (Henry VIII era) included archers showing signs of fingers hypertrophied from long hours of practice pulling these 100 pound plus yew longbows. Skill and many hours of practice was indeed required to achieve the proficiency displayed by English and Welsh bowman from Crecy to Poitiers to Agincourt in 1346, 1356, and 1415.

The second point is that wise analysts have wondered about battles such as Waterloo and the impact that might have been made by 5000 longbow men firing 10 arrows per minute into a column attack of French infantry. I think they would have had a "field day" raining 50,000 arrows per minute into a tightly packed mass of men wearing NO body armor of any sort. (Remember, they stopped armored knights on horseback at Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt.)

Seems to me, even minimally accurate bowmen could have had an impact at Waterloo and other Napoleonic age battles with rapidity of fire and the vulnerability of unarmored infantry.
Wounding would have been sufficient to halt an attack. In fact, wounding was the usual result of musket ball hits as well.

I think I could fire an arrow every six seconds into a brigade size mass of French infantry from say 150 yards to 50 yards, and then I would get the heck out of there - - perhaps moving to a flank to resume firing arrows. The archers could have retired behind a line of infantry with muskets and fixed bayonets when the enemy reached truly effective musket range which was probably closer to 50 yards than 100 yards.
If cavalry attacked, they could have sought refuge in the vaunted British squares as did the officers.

Just some thoughts - - which others have had over the years.
Terrific question. I recall that Stonewall Jackson thought about bringing pikes back to infantry warfare which makes much less sense than the longbow.

where can i purchase a longbow in the u.k?

i would like a place which i could drive to and see a guy about. tell him what i want how i want it. and then have him make it in a week or 2. arrows would also be nice. i use a compound bow so i dont really know any where i could buy a longbow

Well, where do you live? There are plenty of shops in the UK that sell longbows, along with recurves and compounds. In fact, as far as I can tell, most archery shops do sell traditional bows (including longbows and arrows)!
